victoria east west athletes headed to state

This past weekend, multiple athletes from Victoria East and West High School competed at the Regional level in their sports and will be advancing to compete at the State level this weekend. 

Wresting

Jessica Yanez, Victoria West Junior finished 4th place at the UIL Region 4-5A Wrestling Tournament, earning her a ticket to compete at the State tournament this weekend in Katy at the Berry Athletic Center. This is Jessica’s first year wrestling. “When I started wrestling late in September, I was just trying it out, but my brother and Coach TK kept pushing me to be my best,” said Yanez. “In my first tournament ever, I took 3rd…now here I am [advancing to] the State tournament. I couldn’t be more excited and happier.”

Wyatt Mican, Victoria West Senior, also advanced to the State tournament after taking home a silver medal in the 165-weight class. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time,” said Mican. “I always knew I would get here eventually and I’m incredibly excited to compete with the rest of the best wrestlers in the state. I want to thank my coaches and my opponents for bringing me this far, but I’m not done yet! It’s time for the hard work to pay off.”

Victoria East Junior Xavier Salazar also earned his spot at the State wrestling tournament, finishing 4th place at Regionals. “It feels really great making such a big achievement with the sport that I love,” said Salazar. “I plan on continuing to do my best going forward.”

Swimming

At the Region VIII-5A Swimming and Diving Meet, Victoria West Junior Shelby Travis brought home two gold medals, placing 1st in both the 500 and 200 yard freestyle and advancing to the State meet at the Jamil Texas Swimming Center in Austin. “I am excited for the opportunity to compete at State,” said Travis. 

Sarah Hagan, Victoria East Sophomore, placed 3rd in 1m diving at the Regional meet, earning her a spot at State as well. “I am excited about advancing,” said Hagan, “but nervous to actually compete.”
