school matters

In November, educational institutions across the country took the time to celebrate and recognize the contributions of education support professionals and substitute educators, who are often unsung heroes in the educational landscape. In public school education, the spotlight often shines brightly on teachers and administrators. However, behind every successful school operation lies a dedicated group of professionals whose contributions are vital to the overall educational experience. From the friendly faces in our front offices to the bus drivers who ensure students arrive safely to school, every role plays a critical part in nurturing a supportive learning environment.

For many students, every school day begins and ends with our bus drivers, who play a pivotal role in ensuring students’ safe travel to and from school. Besides providing safe, efficient, and quality transportation services, they also instruct students on safety rules and regulations while on board and during the ride, how to get safely on and off of the bus, and how to safely cross the street. They must also keep their assigned bus clean and fueled, check for mechanical defects before and after each trip, and report needed repairs to the shop.

In every school, campus secretaries and clerks handle a myriad of responsibilities that keep their schools running smoothly. They manage administrative tasks, handle inquiries from parents and students, and are often the first point of contact for parents, students, and visitors, providing assistance and information while fostering a welcoming environment.

A healthy, filling meal can make a significant difference in a student’s ability to learn and thrive, which is why cafeteria workers are essential, often going above and beyond to accommodate diverse dietary needs, ensuring that everyone has access to healthy meals. And this doesn’t stop at the end of a school year; our child nutrition department also provides breakfast and lunch during the summer for children ages 18 and under.

Substitute teachers step up when needed, ensuring that learning continues smoothly when teachers are out. Their flexibility and adaptability are crucial in maintaining educational continuity. While they may only be in a classroom for a short time, substitutes contribute to a stable learning environment and support students’ needs during transitions, helping to uphold lesson plans and school culture.

A clean and well-maintained school is essential for creating a conducive learning environment. Maintenance and custodial staff work tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring that campus facilities are safe, clean, and ready for students and staff. Their responsibilities extend beyond routine cleaning; they also address concerns and perform repairs concerning air conditioning, plumbing, landscaping, electricity, and more.

School counselors and Social Emotional Behavior Specialists play a vital role in the emotional and social well-being of students. They provide support in navigating challenges, fostering resilience, and promoting mental health awareness within the school community. By addressing the diverse needs of students, they help create a safe and inclusive environment where every child can grow their genius and Find Their ‘And’.

Classroom aides also play a significant role in supporting both teachers and students. They assist with classroom management, help individualized learning, and provide additional support to students who may need extra guidance. Their presence allows educators to focus on instruction while ensuring that all students receive the assistance and attention they deserve.

In districts everywhere, and particularly in VISD, the contributions of those in supporting roles in education cannot be overstated. Each individual plays an integral part in shaping the educational journey of our students. Their combined efforts create a comprehensive, nurturing environment where students can learn, grow, and succeed. From supporting academic achievement to promoting emotional well-being and safety, these professionals are the backbone of every educational institution.
