VISD remains committed to ensuring that every student has access to a safe, supportive learning environment. As established by Supreme Court law, all students—regardless of immigration status—have a constitutionally protected right to receive a public education. As part of the statewide data collection system, VISD does not collect any information regarding a student’s immigration status.
We understand that state and national news regarding changes in federal enforcement policies may cause uncertainty and anxiety for some of our families. Therefore, we want to provide clarity on how these changes impact our district, specifically the rescission of the “sensitive location” designation that previously limited immigration enforcement actions at schools, hospitals, and places of worship.
While VISD is not responsible for enforcing immigration laws, we do have established legal protocols in place in the event that law enforcement officers, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), arrive at a VISD campus. Like any other law enforcement agency, ICE officers must follow proper procedures, including checking in at the front office, showing identification, and providing valid legal documentation before any action is taken on school property.
As with all school safety plans, district and campus administrators have been briefed on district protocols to uphold state and federal laws, while prioritizing student safety and minimizing disruptions to the learning environment. Our staff is trained to follow these protocols in a way that respects students’ rights and maintains the integrity of our schools as safe places of learning.
We encourage all parents and guardians to review and update their emergency contact information. Having the most current contact details on file allows the district to provide timely and accurate communication in the event of any emergency. To update your information, please contact your child’s campus.
VISD remains committed to fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed.
