Victoria ISD’s Career and Technology Institute’s (CTI) cosmetology students headed to the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi to compete in the D12 Leadership and SkillsUSA State Conference and Competition from Thursday, March 31, to Sunday, April 3.
20 total students from both Victoria East and West high schools enrolled in Cosmetology I and II entered projects into the competition. Students were also required to submit an academic notebook graded with an engineering rubric and a personal resume.
Cosmetology 1 students submitted exhibit projects in fantasy hair and make-up, 3D acrylic nail art, box braiding and hair extensions, artistic theme and a 3D job exhibit. Cosmetology II students submitted exhibit projects in fantasy hair and make-up, flat nail art and a 3D job exhibit.
Six students also chose to participate in the opportunity to write essays and apply for scholarships from Skills USA Texas.

“This was our first year participating and we went in prepared, but unknowing what to expect from our competitors,” said Jennifer Wieland, cosmetology teacher for CTI. “They gained on-site, real-world knowledge that will improve their projects and designs for next year. My students are talented, amazing and the best of the best; the awards they earned just highlight their accomplishments! I am excited that they came home from the state competition, already planning and preparing for next year’s competition!”

Winners test their skills, frequently make job contacts, and have a chance of recognition.
